Pumpkin Fun and Candy Corn

Meet Plumpy...

I picked him up at the Dell'Osso Farm in Lathrop, last weekend. That is a very cool place! We named our pumpkin Plumpy. We estimated his weight, his circumference and how many seeds he contained. Then we recorded our findings!

We learned the lifecycle of a pumpkin, and made a super cool pumpkin "book."

Paper everywhere, but it was a productive mess.

Such concentration by all of the kids! It was tricky to glue the pieces together!

They had six pumpkin pages and six pieces for the middle of the pages.

The finished product!!!

One proud girl!!

Back to Plumpy...

These are the yarn strings for measuring the circumference of Plumpy.

A collage of the carving done today! He still needs a face.

Oh! This is art today! We can't have food treats at school, but we can make them!!

It's been a pumpkin productive week!!!

Tree Cutting!

The kids were mesmerized yesterday by this...

This guy was WAY up in the tree, cutting it down.

We watched him for a little while on our "free break." The kids were very impressed when the tree pieces dropped.

The final view today. They were back and cut down another tree, using a cherry picker.

So Far in October

We made pumpkins!!

The students got four orange strips and one brown strip.

They glued the orange strips into an asterisk and then joined the opposite ends.

They rolled the brown one around a pencil and glued it as a stem. Super cute and super easy!

Last week we ripped pumpkins!

The kids could only use their fingers and glue! They are so creative!!

September

Art in September.

We colored coffee filters with marker. When sprayed with water, the colors ran and made them extra beautiful!

We glued the coffee filters behind apple frames, and gave them a "haircut" to trim off the extra.

We added a stem and a leaf.

Ta-da!!!!! Beautiful Fall apples!!!

Math and iPods

The kids played their first Math games today. It was lots of fun but rather crazy. I will be asking for parent help at Back to School Night, September 10.

The first graders played Monster Squeeze. They remembered from kindergarten.

They made number lines and then used a counter to cover a mystery number, which their partner had to guess.

Here's a close up of the number line in progress.

The second graders were working on money. They did this page on their own yesterday, and we reviewed it today.

The second graders played a game with money.

First they had to sort the coins. Then they had to figure out the amount of the coins.

Perhaps the highlight of the day were the iPods!!

I was able to get all four groups on the iPods today. We will start using them next week, during group work. They are disappointed that they can't play Candy Crush or Angry Birds.😄

David Goes to School

Welcome to Room 24's class blog!! We have had a busy first three days! We have read some great books, including David Goes to School by David Shannon. We used the book to establish our class rules. Ask your child to tell you our class rules. We also made our own Davids. Take a look!

The 2nd graders used a pattern and traced all of their pieces. The first graders had the pieces already traced for them, and they just had to assemble their Davids.

Oh there was LOTS of creativity! This one has a full beard!

Everyone worked very carefully on their David.

The finished products are SO cute. I hung them up. Parents, you can see them when you come to Back to School Night on Sept. 10. :-)

Here's a sneak peak of some of the Davids. Super cute!

It's been a great three days! I already love these kids! Thanks to all of the parents who are already helping me out!! You are truly appreciated.

Here's to a great school year!!!

New Friends

We have new friends in room 24!

Remember our mealworms? Well, one of them has transformed!
If you look closely, you can see the larva stage and a pupa right next to it. It starts as an egg, then it becomes a mealworm (larva).

The third stage is a pupa. You can see it by the corner of the apple. If the pupa is touched, it will wiggle. Ew. Gross.

And finally, it's a darkling beetle. Gross, I know. Since this is our first beetle, and since he/she is pretty easy to distinguish from the others, the kids have named him/her Buster Posey, but a friend suggested we rename him/her to BUGster Posey. I will tell the kids tomorrow. They will roar with laughter. 2nd grade humor.

Oh, and we also have a new human friend! A boy. He's #25 on our class list. He's all the way from Boston! We sure have had nice weather to welcome him!

Ants!

We had a visit from #24's pet ants!!

They are harvester ants. They eat that blue goo. They don't have names. :-) although the discussion of names for them was interesting.

Aren't they cool? Apparently they will bite if they get out.

Really cool tunnels.

These look like the easiest pets to own!!

Updated

Our class won the Read Across America trophy, for 2nd grade!

Isn't it a pretty trophy? The kids worked hard to get that trophy. They read A LOT of pages.

See our wormy friend? We are raising him/her and many of his/her friends. They will transform into something else. The kids made predictions. I know what they will be, but I am not talking!

Science

After some technical difficulties, my blog is back online!

We had a couple of special science assemblies.

#9, balancing on balloons!

#14, ready to help our science guy.

These girls made their own optical illusion, learned from the science guy.

To celebrate #24's birthday, we had a Mad Science presentation!

The kids dropped marbles into flour to create craters.

Using lots of cool stuff, and dry ice, our scientist made a comet!

It was very cool, especially because it smoked and made noise!

#24 in her birthday science goggles! Thanks for the Mad Science assembly!!
