A Cow

Yesterday we had an assembly. The Dairy Council of California came, and brought an entire cow, and a calf!!

The man showed the kids how to milk the cow, and told them all about cows. Did you know that cows have four stomaches?

Ellie is this cow's name. She's milked twice a day at 1:00 am and 1:00 pm.

They drove in from their ranch in Santa Cruz.

The baby calf (Della) was tied up on our play structure while the man talked about the full grown cow. I think she wanted to play!

Bringing the baby out for everyone to meet.

That calf wanted to EAT!! The kids all got to pet her after the assembly.

Snow Globes

There was much excitement last week, when the kids got to make snow globes!

First they used pipe cleaners to make a penguin.

A finished penguin!!

The kids glued their penguins, and their snowy tree, to the base, then they let them dry overnight.

I assembled the snow globes the following day! They are so cute!

This one looks like he's sliding on ice!

Super cute!

A condominium of penguin snow globes!

Elfie must have loved them too, because he used them in his winter scene!

That elf is crazy!

An Elf

We have a class elf! Meet Elfie...

He's so very cute. He watches us. The kids tell me he moves while I teach.

On Tuesday, when I was out, the kids found Elfie in the homework tub!! How did he get all the way over there?

The kids wrote Elfie a note.

On Wednesday, we found him on top of our small readers, with the note the kids wrote, and a box on his head! What a crazy elf!

And that brings us to today...

Elfie started a conga line!!! This sure is one active elf!

Today (after the elf excitement), we compared and contrasted the gingerbread houses we drew!

We used Venn diagrams to compare and contrast them.

Because we have one fewer student right now, this group had to make a Venn diagram for three!!

Let's Get Caught Up

A lot has been going on in class...

My DonorsChoose project was funded! We have 5 iPod Touches we can use in class! They are still being loaded with apps.

We made owls. I bet you are wondering what is up with all of the owls. I sure do love them.

Our Davids, peeking out of the Friday Folders.

Writing!! The kids shared their ideas with their table groups.

Lots of talking about writing!

The kids even got to tell the ceiling their story for writing.

The ceiling is a GREAT listener!!

Math! The kids got to measure stuff, with tape measures.

Measuring the door. Oh look! More owls!!!

Recording their findings, in their Math Journals.

And that brings us to today...

Meet Elfie. He's our classroom elf. He was sent to watch over us.

October Reader and a Grasshopper

Room 24 is participating in the Sharks Reading is Cool Program. Our goal is to read LOTS of pages in the hopes that Sharkie (the Sharks mascot) will visit our classroom.

#10 won the October medal. He read 6,969 pages!!!! Congrats #10!

We had a special visitor today...

A rather giant grasshopper (or possibly a katydid-it really does look like a katydid), somehow made its way into our classroom. His/her arrival caused quite a stir.

Since it wasn't a spider, I caught it!!! I wanted to get a better picture if it, but he/she had other ideas.

It flew away right away, but was kind enough to land on the wall so I could snap a picture. Room 24 is NEVER boring!

Monsters and Magic

The kids made monsters. I made a trip to the new Hobby Lobby store in San Martin a couple of weeks ago, and found a kit that makes 30 monsters. Perfect and pretty cute too!

We had our first MAGIC (Music and Geography in Concert) lesson Thursday. The kids learned about the Mississippi River!

They got to make their own boats!

What a GREAT sail on #19's boat! Go Giants!!!

#18 busy creating!

#2 is busy creating as well!

This is our docent, #25's mom (with student #3). She did an awesome job and we look forward to our future MAGIC lessons!!

This is #12 and his dad. His dad helps out in the classroom but is out if commission right now because he just had back surgery. We wrote him letters, and he sent us a letter back, and this picture. We wish him a speedy recovery!! Oh and Go Giants!
